15 Years of Global Understanding and Music!

2011 was a special year for The Multicultural Music Group. This past year we were proud to celebrate our 15th anniversary of service to New York City’s youth. We are committed to increasing our range and scope of services for our student population. Over recent years, the economic climate has been devastating to the arts in Public schools throughout New York City. We are happy to announce that the MMG has been fortunate in being able to expand our program to reach a broader population. For the 2011-12 school year we are extremely happy to welcome back MS 254 from the Fordham section of the Bronx, MS 223 and X296 from the South Bronx area, Mott Hall High School located in upper Manhattan and the newest addition to our family, MS 421 also located in upper Manhattan. Over the last fifteen years the MMG has provided vital services to over 5,000 of New York City’s youth. The Multicultural Music Group wishes to thank all of the organizations and individuals that have made our success possible.

MMG and Youth INC Together again in “Celebration”

The Multicultural Music Group and Youth INC hosted the much-anticipated gala at the Waldorf Astoria hotel on November 14, 2011. “Celebration” is the culmination of a yearlong partnership with Youth INC. During this time MMG has taken part in several workshops, meetings and cultivation events with the purpose of improving our fund raising capabilities in order to provide better services to our students. Youth INC, a non-profit organization, dedicates its resources to improve other organizations who serve our city’s disadvantaged youth. 2011 marked the 4th year that the MMG participated in the Celebration program.
The event was very successful and involved 14 partner organizations. Over 2 million dollars were raised by all of the different non-profit groups. After the MMG reception, guests were treated to great music and dancing courtesy of the Hank Lane orchestra. On behalf of our Board, Staff and students, we would like to thank everyone that donated funds and time to enable us to surpass our goal.

MMG and Casas Culturales

On May 26, 2011 MMG students from MS 223 performed for the entire MS 223 student body. This performance was the culmination of the “Casas Culturales” project which was taught and administered by the legendary Bomba and Plena group, Los Pleneros de la 21. This experience was made possible by a grant from The New York State Council on the Arts. MMG music students participated in a 10 session residency which involved singing, dancing and drumming. They were also taught the history and culture of this popular Puerto Rican folkloric art form. The performance was very well received by the students and the participant’s family members. We hope to continue this enriching partnership with LP21 and NYSCA for many years to come. It is the mission of the MMG to provide quality, multicultural programming to our youth.
